An independent capo
Bösendorfer is the only piano manufacturer in the world to install a removable capo in the upper register. This is the only way to ensure precise adjustment of these strings. Indeed, even after years of playing, the capo can easily be overhauled and precisely repositioned, to guarantee Bösendorfer sound quality, generation after generation.
A unique sounding board
Unlike other piano makers, Bösendorfer prefers solid spruce to laminated wood for its soundboards. They are made of 80 % spruce, from the soundboard to the outer rim. So, like a violin, the entire resonance body is involved in the formation and diffusion of sound. What's more, Bösendorfer craftsmen prepare the inner girdle in such a way that its curvature perfectly matches that of the outer girdle. Thanks to this unique Bösendorfer process, the vibrations generated by the notes are transmitted to all the spruce parts. The entire piano becomes a resonant body. This complex process is the heritage of traditional Viennese piano making, and the guarantee of a rich, colorful palette of nuances. The purity of sound that is the Bösendorfer legend.
The song of wood
At the heart of every Bösendorfer piano is the resonance spruce. Our spruce grows in Austria, at an altitude of 800 m, an ideal location that promises a tight grain and regular growth. Alternating seasons, sun, wind and cold gently bring it to maturity. Then it's time to fell and split it - only in winter, when it's out of sap - and let it dry naturally in the open air, outside our workshops, for five years. This rare species plays such an important role in the purity of the sound, that our pianos are made with over 80 % of it, a figure higher than any other manufacturer. If we include drying in the manufacturing time, it takes six years to transform a tree into a piano. As precious as materials, time is one of the necessary components in the making of the Bösendorfer sound.

Each string is individually tied with a hand-made loop. This facilitates revision and improves tuning stability. Generations of tuning, one string at a time.
